The GT Interview - Sassy In the City
Posted on March 25 2016
When not working for the number one luxury mens magazine, Lauren's writing a notebook of her favourite trends, lusts lists and cool new things from the fashion and beauty world at www.sassyinthecity.com
Experienced in working in advertising with brands such as ELLE, Sunday Times Style and Cosmo, she's learned to sound out what's right for her and understands her skin, hair and body way more than she did before, buying only what she loves and sharing it with you!
Tell us a little bit about why you got into blogging
I’ve worked on luxury magazines for almost eight years now and every month I’ve canvassed competitor titles, be it womens or most recently, mens - so you could say I’ve read nearly every magazine frequently in that time! I’ve always had my favourite style of writing and topics of interest so I took up writing as a hobby. It’s been a great way to help me unwind. Like most bloggers, I love clothes and beauty products so I like to share my likes with whoever may be reading.
What’s your advice to someone looking to get into (fashion) blogging?
Go for it but don’t be another ‘same’ blogger. Find your niche - are you a great photographer? Do you have one style that you love? Are you better at writing and reporting than styling?
What blogs do you read / follow yourself?
I’ve always been curious of Victoria from InTheFrow as she’s really one of the early adopters meaning she’s now really relishing in the fruits of her labour. I also love Lydia Elise Millen’s honest style of writing and she is just gorgeous!
What’s the most inspirational advice you’ve been given?
More of a quote than advice really - “The one thing behind every success was the initial decision to try”.
What’s been the high point of your career so far?
Meeting Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City was by far one of my best career highlights for sure. Having dinner with Lydia Elise Millen was also pretty cool and recently I’ve been asked to style a London shop window (coming soon). A few highlights but all equally amazing. From my day job, a few years back I won an award which took me on a work placement to Hearst in NYC, the home of Cosmopolitan etc. It’s where they filmed ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ so that was exciting.
How often do you work out / what’s your personal favourite way to stay in shape?
When I’m feeling really motivated and working towards a goal, I’ve been known to go to the gym four times a week. Since Christmas I’ve been really naughty though but this week I’ve gone three times so far so maybe I’m turning a much sought after corner. I love a combination of the gym and Pilates.
What’s your top beauty tip?
Always, ALWAYS take your makeup off at night and keep hydrated. I’ve noticed that a after a few glasses of wine the night before, I’ve a few little wrinkles that become deep set until I’ve drank water enough to rehydrate. I could go without makeup generally except for mascara!
Where are your favourite hangouts?
For sure my favourite restaurants right now are Fischers, (an Austrian restuarant in London) and Murakami (a sushi place on St Martins Lane). For drinks it has to be Purl in Marylebone (Daniel took me there when we were dating) or Mews of Mayfair. Kingly Court is a great place to hang out with your girlfriends!
What 5 things could you not live without?
Water, happiness, my family and friends, my laptop and expensive white bedsheets!
